I am an EntreCard undesirable. I think I am as qualified as anyone to comment on why Entrecard sucks as I am a big part of the cause.
My blog is commercial, it is largely uninteresting when on topic and only occassionally, somewhat interesting when off topic and is updated once a week at best.
I am a loyal reciprocal dropper - if the lowest quality blog imaginable (short of the completely immoral - which would not be allowed on Entrecard anyway) drops on me I will drop back.
Most days I drop and run.
I now drop the maximum cards everyday and in that time am in and out as fast as possible.
Am I the reason Entrecard sucks?
Lets consider me some more shall we?
When I drop and run, I regularly, accidentally miss the mark and hit ads.
When I drop I have to keep my eyes open and I can not help but notice posts of interest.
On the 1 in 5 days I don’t drop and run - I comment on some of the interesting posts I’ve seen through the week and stumble a few here and there too.
I have found some really great blogs through Entrecard I would never have found otherwise and am actually genuinely grateful for that, especailly the following:
I have become completely addicted to
History’s Mystery’s (sadly, recently departed)
Others I love to check in on:
Rants, Thoughts and Other Things
As well as at least half a dozen others ( I choose to highlight these as they are examples of the blogs that I would NEVER HAVE FOUND otherwise) some of these I don’t drop on; beacuse I am a reciprocal dropper and some of these bloggers are either more popular or discerning than me (fine either way) but I still make the effort to go find them at least once a week.
And I wouldn’t have room to list all the blogs that I am learning things about Wordpress and Plugins and SEO from (massive amount of room for improvement noted - no idea what I’ve done with these font/default settings atm).
Now just one more point - there are masses of blogs I drop on and have never commented on and barely read despite the fact I am dropping there everyday like
Now, yes this is timely because I happen to be planning a Drupal Project and do you know what I first thought when I realised I’d be needing a lot of work done?
I should contact Drupal Developer in Jakarta. My first correspondence is sure to include are you on elance? Can we discuss a possible project?
On a similar note - A blog involving Professional Counselling & Child Protection is for sale and I’m planning to discuss it as a possible venture for my mother when she visits this weekend though she is not a counsellor and may not be interested - who knows?
So next time you look at your Bounce Stats think of me - I am surely contributing to those depressing figures, but so much more is happening in that 27 seconds than can be reported in a statistic.

I was just doing my drops when I noticed this post and it engaged me to read the whole post and leave a comment. Most blogs I drop on, have the same post for 2-3 days in a row, and I only stop and read posts that interest me when I return blog post favors. But the excellent blogs that have material that catches my eye, I always stop to read a post and comment if appropriate.
Thanks for the mention. Feel free to keep dropping by!
Thanks I will do - love this post on “Defending Disney”
Well there you go, precisely the reason I stay with Entrecard. Equally, you’re demonstrating why some people need to open their minds about the type of EC advertising they will accept. Not everyone has a narrow field of interests.
I used to drop mainly to my inbox but I’ve added in a random element, just to see what else there is. I have found some truly great blogs and made some excellent friends too. Since the blogs you feature overlap with my favourites too, I’m going off now to check on the rest.
Amen on that last sentence
I feel Entrecard is a boon for new bloggers…And Entrecard helps you get established and helps your blog to get popular and starts giving you a traffic which wouldn’t be possible without such a service. Thanks n regards
Thanks to entrecard, I was able to read this post. I have been really one of those “drop and run” droppers basically because I’m just up for the dropping and not about reading the blogs that I drop on. But lately I have made this habit of dropping, then reading some bits of the blog, comment on posts that are interesting, and then close the page. This little habit of mine though doesn’t help me in reaching the daily minimum number of drops. But I guess it is still worth it.

Great post! I am a drop and runner for the most part but I also have stumbled across great blogs that I regularly read and comment on. I think Entrecard is great - not only for the traffic it has brought to my site but the people I have met through it.
Like you, I’m a drop-and-run-but-I’ll-stop-if-something-catches-my eye dropper. I do have a system–it’s a mix of reciprical dropping, dropping on blogs who advertise on my blog, dropping on the blogs I’m advertising on, and dropping on my faves. I also make it a point to comment when I’ve read a good post. So maybe I’m not the typical drop-and-run blogger.
I have yet to reach the 300 mark, but that is never my goal. I think my highest was 187 and that was while I was watching TV. Even then I found some great blogs and have added them to my faves.
I agree about finding blogs I never would have otherwise. I like that idea for a post, actually! Of course, you’ll get the trackback…
Well said! There was a recent post on the Entrecard blog about the value of traffic. Their point was, traffic is traffic, no matter where it comes from - entrecard is a road to sourcing new material, whether you park and play is up to you. I agree wholeheartedly. A road doesn’t generally crack the poops because it has the wrong traffic on it.
Marketers and communication experts tell us the value of positive subliminal messages and branding in the first 20 seconds of a person viewing/hearing a product. Our blogs, and our traffic, are no different. Like you, I am time deficit and cannot immediately read every interesting blog or post I drop on….but gee I’ve got a healthy bookmark list. I frequently come back in my snippets of time to re read or explore.
Sometimes I have insufficient time to make a comment - my prerogative. Sometimes I don’t make comment because my thoughts have already been articulated by someone else. Sometimes I don’t make a comment because I need time to think and consider whatever it is that the post has raised in me.
My interests are varied also and my entrecard blogroll reflects this. These are all blogs that I found via dropping cards left on other sites….I found you that way and I immediately added you to my blogroll because I knew you would be someone I would want to come back to - to check out your plans, to learn more about how hosting works effectively and to support a fellow Aussie blogger.
The entrecard system is not any different to stumbleupon (which I also use and love). Both sites are great places to find new material.
I like entrecard and I encourage others to join. Although I know I have some drop and run traffic - who cares. At least they are being exposed to 20 seconds of child protection….that may well be more than they have previously been exposed to. I wonder how many parents drop and run from the school drop off each morning - would we tell them they are not quality parents? No, we accept it because it is the way it is in the early morning school/work rush….and so it is for me with entrecard. I might drop and run on occasion, but I always know the path for return visits.
And…..would love to chat with your Mum if she is interested.
Completely with you on this one. And if not for Entrecard, I wouldn’t have read, much less commented about this here.
We, the undesirables, should stick together.
Likewise. I use Entrecard in the same manner you do. I think it is a wholly reasonable way to use EC. I’ve found great blogs and experienced increase traffic. I’ve ignored blogs that don’t interest me. Sometimes I’ve dropped cards on a blog six or seven times before “reading” it.
Thanks everyone for the comments….
I should add two things, I always save some drops for the total random following of ads on other people’s blogs - have found some of my favourites by just following the chain as far as possible before hitting a card I’ve already dropped on. I highly recommend it.
Deb from Australian Women Online introduced me to Entrecard and deserves my thanks also.
A - I think you make a good point regarding advertising and the acceptance of advertising from blogs outside of what is strictly relevant to your own. I’ll look at some of your favourites over the next few days too.
Karen - Thanks, you made my day.
Megan - So many good points. Your response sums up my position perfectly and far more eloquently than the post
- though it was an attempt to grab attention, obviously. Will be in touch.
Jamie Sue - I’m glad to hear this. When I read and hear about “junk traffic” on entrecard I have had a tendency to feel guilty. Then when I really sat and thought about it (in reponse to the post Megan mentions on the EC blog and comp entry) For the first time I thought - well hang on, why should I?
Thanks for the mention too.
I with you in this dilemma. There are days that I just drop and drop and drop but there are also days that I drop and stop to read. But I usually scan the first post of any blog that I drop on and stop if the post pulls me in. But you’re right, since I joined Entrecard, my bounce stats became terrible, my traffic increased but not that much and my sleep pattern became erratic because I have to drop as much as possible as I can for that day and fulfill my reciprocal duties before my droppers junk me if I don’t.
BUT like you, I’ve also discovered blogs that I never would have seen, I think I am becoming part of a niche community that I would have never been part of (Filipino foodies), and wouldn’t have known what middle America is thinking about the coming presidential election (I am a transplant here, I came to the US by way of Sydney and New Zealand that’s also why I was interested in dropping by at your site.)
I like the positives better than the negatives. My site was never a money earner anyway (in terms of adsense revenue compared to my other sites that I have not put on Entrecard), I was about to junk it as I thought I was already repeating myself - but with new traffic and new audience, I have a renewed sense of continuing. And traffic is traffic. It does help in increasing my page rank :-).
Can’t agree more. Just like this - we were busy dropping cards and your article completely messed up our routine because we READ the entire thing. Same thing happened on the last site. Ruff.
I agree with Robyn about dropping on a chain as far as it will take you, and also about accepting ads that are not necessarily relevant- I like to see a variety of subjects and I think blog readers in general can benefit from it.
I usually read the topic, and if it is interesting to me, I read the whole thing. Not all drop and run.
Keep up the good work.
bad traffic? count me in.
I already saw this post yesterday but sa soooo lazy to comment of read.
But I came back, why? Maybe because I’m the type of bad traffic that keeps coming back.
I agree the traffic you receive from Entrecard isn’t quality traffic in that it isn’t going to bring more business your way. I have to admit dropping on other Entrecards in the network is pretty low on my priority list these days. I only do it about once a week and even then, I rarely drop on more than 100 blogs in one session - I just don’t have that kind of time.
I have a stack of Entrecard credits to use for advertising which remains unused - again it’s a time issue and when I have to prioritise Entrecard always ends up somewhere near the bottom of the list. I often wonder if Entrecard will still be around in five years - I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t.
Another great post, Rob
Ah, the Junk Drawer is one of my favorites too, and I never would have found it if not for Entrecard.
Have you met Daisy the Curly Cat?
I guess I am like most of the droppers. I start out thinking I will drop on everyone who has dropped on me but then I get to reading blogs and I do have my favorites. One really neat thing is I ran across someone my mother babysat for 30 years ago. Like today this one caught my eyes and of course I had to read until the very last one.
Thank you for the mention! I will say that before my writing partner Jane and I started our blog, our following was very loyal but also miniscule. Participating in EC to the extent that we do made our blog much more visible to the general blogging community. We wouldn’t have many of the readers that we do today if we weren’t active EC members. (And, like you, we wouldn’t have found some of the great blogs that we have through EC.) Yes, the bulk of our traffic is drop-and-run, but that’s okay. As far as I’m concerned, all traffic is good traffic. We have plenty of people who take the time to read, comment, and come back for more. And we are great with that.
Well Said! Entrecard is all of those things. And your post really caught my attention.
“…but so much more is happening in that 27 seconds than can be reported in a statistic.” This is perhaps the best explanation of the dropper fly-by phenomenon I’ve ever read. I hate to admit to people that I drop and run because it sounds like I’m selfish for drops. I’m not. I’m studying each blog I visit, and when something strikes me, I stay longer.
Over time, I get a feel for a blog’s author and their vibe. If I like it, I keep dropping. If not, I’m on my way to do the same for other bloggers. If they drop back, great. If they keep coming back, even better. The burden is ultimately on me to keep them.
Thank you for the shout-out (and also to feefifoto! Yeah, Daisy’s awesome. I never would have met her without EC.)
I have to say that via entrecard, I did find some interesting blogs that I learn something new.
But by and large, the incoming traffic ain’t quality.
Sometimes if the content doesn’t grab my attention in the first few seconds, I’ll leave. Otherwise I’ll just look over, click, then hope for something to strike my attention.
so it is both good n bad i suppose. same thing happens to me. most of the time i just drop n run. i usually only read those we care to read mine n leave a comment or two. else, it is solely “business” (ec). =p but then again, stumble upon something interesting is always rare, especially if it meets our own preference. n i’ll probably leave a long comment when one is found. =)
Point well taken. Thank you for putting into words what we all think while we are doing our daily “drop and run”. I too have discovered so many great blogs that I would have never discovered if not for entrecard. There are more blogs on my bloglist and I too have my favs. Thanks again for putting this into words for those who do think that entrecard sucks.
I am a mixture of drop & running and reading & commenting. It depends on the blog and the content. I’ve found loads of blogs that I really love and follow regularly thanks to EC, a couple of which you mentioned. I’m glad I stopped to read this post!
Thank you all for your comments and you are all welcome for the mentions - keep doing what you’re doing
feefifoto - I have now met Daisy and think we’ll be getting well acquainted from here on in.
archondigital had I come across your blog earlier you’d have had a mention in the favourites too.
I’ve learnt a lot from this one post you know - about the value in making your message as interesting and attention grabbing as possible.
There’s been a little bit of drama concerning the contest this post was entered into - my first ever contest. It seems I am often causing or a part of a drama!

I agree with your post. I have stumbled across some very interesting blogs and ended up learning something or leaving a comment when I only intended to drop and move (hence, this comment). Very clever to begin with “Entrecard Sucks…” I just wished my blog could have been the one of the ones on your most favorite list.
Oh well, my blog’s still new. Thanks for returning my drops.
I don’t necessarily comment - but that doesn’t mean I don’t read. The whiners that go on about drop-and-go need to look at their expectations… and the quality of what they are offering on their blogs.
Entrecard does what it is supposed to do - when it is working, anyway - it brings people in the front door… if you want to make them STAY awhile, you have to give them a reason. Which you obviously have managed to do very successfully
Hey! Thanks so much for the mention
I agree with Archon’s comment 100%!
I haven’t gained a gob of new readers via Entrecard, but I’m still pretty new for one and for two, I don’t mind the added traffic. Not everyone will be inclined to stay and read, but I’m grateful for the one or two (such as yourself!) that do. It would be unrealistic to expect every dropper to enjoy my content and to become a loyal reader.
Besides, blogs typically have a higher bounce rate. Bloggers should know that!
i must admit i to am guilty about dropping and running! There are days that i just drop and drop until i can drop no more without even looking or reading others post. On my good day i do stop and read and comment on interesting topics and i have been following a few blogs as of now. Entrecard is a great tool for everyone not just the bloggers but also for the enjoyment of those people who like to read and get a view on someone else’s thoughts on just about anything.
So it’s all your fault, darn!
