Youve Been Cheating

Cheating Online?

I never thought I’d make such a confession on a blog. It’s just that it’s eating at me. Last night I barely slept, I haven’t written a thing in days let alone been able to complete the more mundane tasks associated with our web hosting business.

I’ve come to the conclusion I must confess; there’s just no way around it.

Robin: Sing A Song of Targeted Keywords

Robin: Sing A Song of Targeted Keywords

Robyn will not use the phrase “cheap web hostingor in anyway link the word cheap with Synchronicity Hosting’s web hosting services. I can tell you, there have been some heated arguments here regarding this fact. There were two occassions in one day, not long ago when she linked “the phrase” to  Synchronicity Hosting.

  • Both times it was upon Daniel’s insistence.
  • Both times she winced like she’d been slapped.
  • Both times she had to add cheerful.

Now, while I can’t deny there’s a big part of me that’s enjoying taking the mickey out of her idiosyncracies in such a public way, I also can’t deny I understand why she resents the word cheap when it comes to the hosting services in question.

She has put thousands of hours into this hosting company and its still in its infancy. Every day she looks for ways to add more value, be more available, more approachable, more helpful in a way that is almost as endearing as it is annoying. While I’m at it, she also:

  • sings outloud very badly,
  • won’t learn keyboard shortcuts,
  • criticises my eating habits,
  • believes in and provides customer service like no one I have ever worked for or with.

That’s a fact and there’s nothing cheap about it.

It’s all about the terms:

You see, she feels the terms budget web hosting and affordable hosting are more fitting descriptions and that cheap domains is acceptable. They are more accurate descriptions of the services Synchronicity Hosting provides. However (and this is a 6ft 3 co-owner however) Daniel also has a say in the matter.

Daniel knows that the combined searches for:

  • “budget web hosting”
  • “affordable web hosting”
  • “low cost web hosting”
  • “discount web hosting”
  • “value web hosting”

don’t pull the numbers that “cheap web hosting” does.

So here I am. Writing my very first post on the blog she’s spent the last week working on, and the title is the phrase that she loathes.

Do I feel bad about it?

Yes and no, mostly no. This is my job, I’m not emotionally connected to it in the way that Robyn and Daniel are and I think we all know its for her own good.

Having said that I am going home now; before I see her.

The 6ft 3 however can hit the publish button.

1. Not testing the service facilities and support response time before committing to a plan.

I don’t know how many times we’ve had new customers arrive and tell us they couldn’t get support from their previous hosting provider. Most often they were impressed by the promise of 24 Hour Live Chat facilities only to find every time they needed to use the facility it was unattended and an email sent in it’s place. Test Live Chat if it’s advertised, use the contact us email, test the response time.

2. Not knowing your requirements.

Ok so if this is your first experience with webhosting its hard to know exactly what you’ll need but the internet is full of information! Yes it is and some of it is still free.

This is also a great excuse to contact potential hosts and see how quickly they answer your queries and how helpful they are in general. Are they recommending the most expensive plan? Are they knowledgeable? Did they tell you should be contacting sales? Do they have free extras as incentive for newcomers (site-builders, Fantastico etc)

3. Paying too much for too little.

Look around, do your research, ask about going over quota, setup fees, money back guarantees and exit-fees if change your mind. The internet is full of information! Yes it is and some of it is still unbiased. (Contact someone who is already with the hosting company you are considering and ask them about the host - will they be staying with them? Do they have any complaints? Are there any hosts they recommend you avoid?)

Make the time to follow these tips before you commit and you’ll be well on your way to finding a supportive, reliable webhosting provider and that will save you a lot of time, money and downtime in the long run.
